BIOGRAPHY
Belgian cellist Romain Dhainaut has performed as a soloist with musical personalities as diverse as Maxim Vengerov and Trevor Pinnock, and has given recitals in most European countries as well as in China and the United States. He studied at the Tournai Conservatory, the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles, the Koninklijk Conservatorium (The Hague), and the Royal Academy of Music (London), where his teachers were Christiane Diricq, Didier Poskin, Harro Ruijsenaars, and Mats Lidström. He was also inspired by the chamber music teaching he has with Thomas Brandis.
An accomplished chamber musician, he was the 'Leverhulme Chamber Music Fellow' at the Royal Academy of Music. He performs regularly in Belgium and abroad with Trio Khnopff (with violinist Sadie Fields and pianist Elodie Vignon). His interest in contemporary music led him to work with composers in the UK, the Netherlands, and France. He was also Invited to Accra to collaborate with the Dutch composer Martijn Padding, during which he workshopped ten pieces for solo cello by young Ghanaian artists.
As a recording artist, he has recorded the chamber version of Mahler's Fourth Symphony (Royal Academy Soloists Ensemble conducted by Trevor Pinnock, Linn Records), and the album "Weinberg 1945" with Trio Khnopff (Pavane Records), which garnered critical acclaim in Europe and North America (5 * Classica, BBC Music Magazine "Chamber Disc of the Month", amongst others). His chamber music concerts have been broadcast by several European radio stations, notably live on BBC Radio 3 during the BBC Proms.
An active teacher, he is assistant of cello and chamber music at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, was a lecturer in methodology at ARTS² / Royal Conservatory of Mons. He also taught the cello at the Conservatory of Tournai and at the Music Academies of Mouscron and Péruwelz. He is currently the Director of the School of Arts in Tournai, an establishment dedicated to the plastic and visual arts.
With an eye to the need for audience development in so-called 'classical' music, he founded Festival Contrastes, within the framework of which he organises diverse events such as 'surprise' concerts, film-concerts, concerts for babies (Mini Contrastes), and educational events (Contrastes Lab). He also advises the Maison de la Culture de Tournai for the programming of Tournai events for the Festival Musical du Hainaut (Festivals de Wallonie).
Romain is a laureate of Vocatio, the Servais competition, and first prize of the Dexia Classics competition. He plays a cello made in Ghent by Hendrik Willems in 1682, beautifully restored by the Maison Bernard (Brussels), and a François Peccatte bow.
